Contact elected officials: 21st Century Dyslexia Act

21st Century Dyslexia Act (2025)

The 21st Century Dyslexia Act (2025) modernizes federal education law by defining dyslexia for the first time and ensuring that schools nationwide use early screening and evidence-based reading instruction. It updates the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to recognize dyslexia as a distinct learning difference rather than a generic “specific learning disability,” giving students access to tailored interventions and supports. The bill directly addresses inequities faced by low-income students, non-English speakers, and children in under-resourced districts, who are often left unidentified and without help. By grounding policy in the science of reading, this Act aims to close the literacy gap and give every child—regardless of zip code or background—the right to learn to read.
